In contrast to the strong acid resin, the weak acid exchanger converts little, if any, of the neutral salts (chlorides and sulfates) to free mineral acidity. Neutralization is not required, although degasification or aeration is practiced. Regeneration of the weak acid resin is more efficient than with strong acid cation exchangers, minimizing acid waste disposal. Combining a salt-regenerated softener with an acid-regenerated weak acid resin provides complete softening and dealkalization with a single column.
