Protection from Exposure

Maximum permissible levels of external and internal radiation (Table 11.23.2) have been set by the National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP) and by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP). In addition, the practice of keeping exposures As Low As Reasonably Achievable (NRC 1976) is recommended by these and many other organizations. This means that every activity involving exposure to radiation should be planned to minimize unnecessary exposure to workers and the public. For further explanations of radiation protection the reader is referred to the many references available (Henry 1969, Olishifski 1981, Schapiro 1981).
