The following equation determines the velocity of a charged particle suspended in a gas and under the influence of an electric field by equating the electric and Stokes drag forces on the particle:

Here, Vp is the particle migration velocity toward the collector electrode, and E is the collector electric field. The value for n depends on whether field or diffusion charging is predominant. Particles charged by field charging reach a steady-state migration velocity, whereas the migration velocity for small particles charged by diffusion charging continues to increase throughout the time that the dust is retained in the precipitator.
