As water flows through a confined aquifer, the flow changes from confined to unconfined when the piezomet-ric head ^ becomes less than the aquifer thickness H. This case is shown in Figure 9.5.1. At the interzonal boundary, the head ^ becomes equal to the thickness H. The continuity of flow requires no change in discharge at the interzonal boundary.
