Wear Test Conditions

The following test conditions were selected for Cameron Plint friction and wear tests. The ring sample was oscillated against the liner at 20Hz using a 5 mm stroke. The normal load was 250 N. acting on a 12.7mm length of ring sample (19.7 Nmm-1 loading). For lubricated tests.

oil was supplied at a rate of one drop every 10 seconds (10.8 cm3/hour). except where stated. Test durations were normally 6 hours for lubricated and one hour for unlubricated tests.

In all cases, ring and liner samples were machined from actual engine components. Ring wear volumes were calculated from scar width measurements on the barrel face, having previously measured the barrel radius. Liner wear rates were determined by stylus profilometry measurements.
