The coating composition and the substrate material will determine the thermal expansion mismatch between coating and substrate. This will lead to residual stresses during processing and in service. The coating and substrate compositions will also determine the coating-substrate chemical reactions. These reactions will affect the bond strength. Post-deposition treatments such as laser glazing and fusing will affect both the bonding of the coating and the porosity and strength.

Coating properties which influence wear and friction and the methods to be considered in tailoring these properties to meet the wear and friction goals.
