Summary

Two dimensional finite element analysis of thick thermal barrier coatings has predicted that properly designed and fabricated thermal barrier coatings can survive the predicted thermal stresses imposed at peak operating conditions for diesel engines. Analysis of thermal transients has shown that the coatings should also survive the rapid heating and cooling cycles that occur during diesel engine operation. The JUTRC layered coating has survived rig tests under thermal gradients that are more severe than projected for this advanced diesel engine.
