The primary oxidation product then undergoes a condensation polymerization reaction to form progressively larger molecules which eventually become sludge and varnish. This condensation polymerization reaction is much more rapid than the primary oxidation reaction. IR and NMR spectra of these oxidized products show the chemical bond structures illustrated in Figure 3. The two conjugated double-bond systems are more prominent in the condensation polymer product.
