Nrc Test

The AAR has a cooperative agreement with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to investigate monolithic ceramic and nonmetallic components in medium-speed diesel engines. For the 1987 study, a silicon nitrate derivative will be inserted into the valve seat area of the NRC Bombardier SCRE.

The test will start using standard Number 2 diesel fuel oil. Detailed engine performance measurements will be made to determine if the new material influences the efficiency of the engine. If the material is able to withstand full load conditions, the fuel will be switched to a "simulated" residual blend. The blend will meet the NRC's Canadian 1990 Fuel specification, with the exception of the Vanadium and Sodium limits, which will be raised to test the ability of the material to withstand erosion. The NRC test is scheduled to take place in the fall of 1987.
