Material Selection

Some material selection criteria are summarized in Table 1. The first criterion is that of survivability in the chemical and thermal environment. Ther-mochemical calculations are useful for estimating chemical reactivity. Reactivity is estimated for the free energies of reaction (AF) involved in the assumed reactions of the candidate materials with the environment and at the temperature of interest. Equilibrium constants (k.) are then calculated from the free energies of reaction using the equation:
