In 1982, the U.S. Department of ; Energy (DOE) initiated the Heavy Duty Transport Technology (HDTT) Program. The program is part of DOE's Heat

Engine Development effort which is directed toward conserving the nation's petroleum fuel reserves. The HDTT program's objective is to develop a technology base to assist industry in developing an advanced fuel efficient heavy duty diesel engine. The primary focus is on the development of the so-called "adiabatic" or low heat rejection truck engine technology. A secondary objective is to extend that technology to other classes of engines namely, light duty, marine, and railroad diesels. This paper will describe the program in general and those aspects of it that directly involve coating development.
