For the hydrocarbon system and molecules that contain significant portions of hydro carbon chains, the temperature level above the minimum to produce thermal decomposition will determine the kinds of products of the thermal reaction. These thermal decomposition products and the temperatures favoring their formation are shown in Table 6. These reactions can be affect ed by the catalytic effect of the bearing surface. For example, ferrous alloys and iron serve as hydrogenation catalysts for hydrocarbons. Alumina as a ceramic bearing surface would be expected to have an influence on cracking of the hydrocarbon. The specific nature of the bearing surface would, therefore, determine the temperature and the predominant reaction that would take place. The coefficient of friction in the bearing would determine the actual temperature rise above equilibrium temperature which would also have a major influence on the reaction.
