In Task 1 a fini^S elemerit " (FE) analysis was completed as shown in Figure 8. There are eight elements of the FE grid in the coating thickness, one element to represent the bond layer and four elements thru the stainless steel piston crater wall. This is an ANSYS two-dimensional finite element program. Fig. 9 shows an output of that program based on the targeted heat rejection shown here as a 52% reduction in heat flow thru the piston. The calculations are based on a gas temperature of 760 C which results in a maximum predicted thermal barrier temperature of 755°C at the crater bowl
