Conclusions

Prom the results of this study it is concluded that:

1) The average room temperature flexure strength of the eight transformation toughened ceramics studied was very impressive, two to three times the values reported for conventional ceramics.

2) The materials studied showed significant decrease in average flexure strength with increasing temperatures. At 1050°C average flexure strength decreased 65-75% for the Zr02 based material and 40% for the dispersion toughened A1203 material.

3) The susceptibility of the Zr02 based materials to the effects of aging and to slow crack growth limits their potential application as heat engine components.
