Coatings

mix bottled gases to form a composition that we have determined as being similar to the exhaust gas of the engine. In the furnace we also control the dewpoint. By this method we have much better control over the environment and, of course, the temperatures, and we can evaluate the effect of this environment on the various coatings. Plasma sprayed test samples are being tested for 1,000 hours to evaluate coating degradation. The samples are bend specimens. After running in the environment they will be tested in the bend fixture to see if there is a degrading of the tensile and compressive strengths due to exposure in this setup.

The second test, which is just beginning, is the thermal shock test, which is shown in the next two figures.
