Figure 36.15 illustrates the distributions associated with these random values and a sample life cycle plan that shows three applications of preventive maintenance (Frangopol et al. 2001b). Given these variables, Monte Carlo simulation was used to obtain the distributions of the times when essential maintenance is required (i.e., the so called rehabilitation time) with and without previous preventive maintenance actions. The analysis provides the basis for planning the number and timing of preventive maintenance activities to extend the service life of the group of bridges by the desired time period.
