The finishing operations have to make sure that the concrete surface is produced with minimum manipulation. Overworking of the surface can result in a reduction of the surface air content; hence, susceptibility to deicing freezing and thawing damage. The concrete should not be troweled while water is present on the surface. Neither should water be applied to aid in the finishing process. Doing so would increase the water/cementitious material ratio, and considerably reduce the compressive strength, durability, and long-term performance of the top layer.
