1525 Polymers

The incorporation of a polymer into concrete can produce excellent HPC with compressive strength of 100 MPa or higher and tensile strength of 10 MPa or higher. The commonly used polymers for producing HPC include: epoxy, methyl methacrylate, styrene, unsaturated polyster resins, vinyl esters, and latex.

These polymers are incorporated into Portland cement pastes commonly in the form of water-soluble or emulsified solutions. As the Portland cement hardens, the polymer simultaneously hardens forming a continuous matrix of polymer that penetrates throughout the whole concrete specimen, thus facilitating a rapid decrease in porosity of cement concrete.
