1522 Aggregate

The aggregate, including coarse and fine aggregates, consists of about 70 to 80% of the total concrete by volume; thus, it is very important in the production of HPC. The main factors affecting the development of high performance of concrete are: particle shape, particle size distribution, strength of the aggregate, and possible chemical reaction between the aggregate and the paste. Unlike their use in normal concrete, where we rarely consider the strength of the coarse aggregate, in high-strength concrete the aggregates may well become one important strength limiting factor. Also, since it is necessary to maintain a low w/c ratio to achieve high strength, the shape and grading of the aggregate, including fine and coarse aggregates, must also be very tightly controlled.
