As previously discussed in this chapter and in Chapter 7 (Future Power Generation), gasification integrated with chemicals and fuels production is the technology anticipated to be utilized for future power complexes. Direct liquefaction is a much-researched technology with proven processes operated at the pilot and demonstration scale; however, it is not a widely accepted commercial technology, although facilities are under construction in China. Thus, a brief review of key direct liquefaction processes will be presented here but direct liquefaction will not be discussed in great detail.
