Coal Consumption in the United States

Coal is used in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In 2000, ten states consumed approximately 45% of the total coal produced in the United States (see Table 2-4). In 2002, most of the coal was consumed in the electric power sector, as shown in Figures 2-10 and 2-17. Nearly 92% of all coal consumed in 2002 was in the electric power sector, which includes both the electric utilities and independent power producers. Following is a breakdown, by sector, for coal consumption in 2002 (in 1000 short tons):
