Consider an N-component closed system in which a liquid mixture at temperature T and pressure P is in equilibrium with a vapour mixture at the same temperature and pressure. The condition of thermodyn-amic equilibrium is that the chemical potentials of the components in both phases must satisfy the equality relation:

M<V = M<L (i = 1, 2, ..., N) (constant T) [1]

The introduction of the quantity called fugacity by G.N. Lewis has facilitated the application of this condition. The fugacity of a system, f, at constant temperature is defined in the following two equations:
