Potentials used in aqueous TLE are in the range of 10-100 V cm_1, with currents of around 10100 mA. This generates power levels of around 1-100 W. At the higher power levels, plate cooling is essential in order to prevent drying out. When nonaqueous systems are used, potentials between 200 and 2000 V cmare used, with currents of 0.01-2 mA, generating between 0.02 and 20 W. Cooling of plates run at higher potential is seldom employed. Cooling is rarely necessary and very difficult to achieve due to the inherent incompatibility of high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulation characteristics in materials.
