The extraction of polar pollutants from very adsorp-tive matrices is a difficult task. A large range of polar pollutants can be effectively removed from adsorptive matrices such as dust and fly ash, by using enhanced-fluidity liquid mixtures. Solutes as polar as phenols, triazine herbicides, and as large as 3-4 ring polynuc-lear aromatic hydrocarbons are effectively removed using enhanced-fluidity liquid mixtures, such as methanol-H2O-CO2 and methanol-H2O and are superior to the use of other standard methods such as Soxhlet extraction.
