Probably the major advantage of paper chromatogra-phy, and one that ensured its rapid adoption, is the simplicity of the equipment required in order to perform it. Essentially this equipment is the same as that now used for TLC and all that is required is a suitable type of paper to act as the stationary phase, a means of applying the sample, a developing tank and a solvent system. A typical set-up for descending paper chromatography is illustrated in Figure 1 showing, in addition to the tank and solvent reservoir the antisiphon rod used to prevent excessive solvent flow from flooding the paper. Tanks were normally operated with the atmosphere saturated with the vapours of the solvent used for development in order to ensure good and reproducible results.
