Distribution Coefficients

Each point on an isotherm (simply or rigorously constructed) represents the distribution of ions between the solid and liquid phases. At each point a distribution coefficient (DA) can be defined for the ion A as follows. Da = concentration of A per unit weight of dry exchanger/concentration of A per unit volume of external solution.

The distribution coefficient is widely used as a convenient check of selectivity at fixed, predetermined, experimental parameters. Equilibrium must have been achieved for this assessment to be valid.
