Readers are also encouraged to consult the official compendia for analysis of bulk or formulated drugs. For analysis of biological samples, the samples may be directly injected with a column switching technique instead of employing liquid-liquid or solid-phase extraction. For sensitive detection, drugs may be subjected to pre- or post-column derivatization, especially with a fluorescent chromophore. Diastereomeric derivatization is useful for analysis of chiral drugs. Mass spectrometric (MS) detection is another way to increase sensitivity. Indeed, cephem and macrolide antibiotics are analysed with HPLC-MS to detect minute amount of drugs. For cephem antibiotics, capillary HPLC has been coupled with mass spectrometric detection.
