Cationic Surfactants

Unlike anionic surfactants, positively charged surfactants, monomers and micelles are strongly attracted to the negatively charged surface of the fused-silica capillary wall and thus have a significant effect on EOF. Cationic surfactants such as long-chain alkylam-monium salts may even cause a reversal of EOF through electrostatic interactions with the capillary surface, and this may occur at surfactant concentrations below the CMC. The capability for reversed EOF has been successfully exploited in MEKC separations.
