Application feasibility of absorption technology depends largely on the relative cost of fuel and electricity. Where applicable, the combination of low summer fuel costs and high electricity costs may result in strong economic performance for absorption cycle systems versus conventional electric motor-driven refrigeration.

Availability of recovered heat can also favor application of absorption technology. In a cogeneration application, absorption refrigeration can use heat recovered from a high-temperature application, such as a prime mover applied to electric generation or mechanical drive refrigeration service.

Similar to prime mover vapor compression system driver options, which are discussed in the previous chapter, another factor that may support superior economic performance for a given absorption technology application is the condition of limited electric service capacity.
