A significant portion of energy used on a daily basis is in the form of electricity, a secondary energy source. The bulk of electricity production occurs in large central power plants using fuel as the primary energy source. Switchgears and transformers control the delivery of the electricity from the central power plants to the consumers through a network of transmission lines, which interconnect nearly every utility service territory. While still a minority contributor, a growing percentage of the total electricity generated in this country comes from small and large independent power producers and cogen-erators.

This chapter presents basic electricity definitions and theory that are necessary for understanding the various technologies and applications presented throughout this section.
