additional capacity would be needed to offset expected losses from refrigerant conversion.

The current trend is toward centrifugal compressors using R-22, R-123, or R-134a and replacing CFC refrigerants such as R-11, R-12, R-113, R-114, and R-500. Screw and reciprocating compressors are moving toward (or staying with) R-22, R-134a, and ammonia. One of the results of the new regulatory environment has been increased investment in absorption and desiccant technology development. This should lead to improved performance and lower capital cost for these systems. Tremendous investments have been made to optimize performance of traditional CFC-based systems during the past several decades and additional improvements are expected as a result of research and development efforts on alternative refrigerants. Other potential refrigerants are also currently under development and testing.

In addition to being a non-renewable supply, the non-renewable energy sources release emissions into the air, which has an adverse effect on the environment.
