It is rare, indeed, when a simple equation is the result of an optimization study. In both DG design and DG system operation, the optimal situation can only be identified reliably using computer simulation tools. For design one needs to jointly simulate loads and DG performance including weather effects with specified economics. The result will be the system design that appears to maximize performance for the system selected for final design. During operation, a similar simulation tool would be used for operation of the system rather than for design.
