This paper deals with a vapour-feed direct methanol fuel ccll (DMFC) based on a Nafion 117® solid polymer electrolyte. Pt-Ru/C and Pt/C catalysts were employed for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction, respectively. Structure and surfacc chcmistry of catalysts were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoclcctron spectroscopy (XPS). Membrane /clcctrode assembly (M&E) was prepared by using a "paste process" method. Electrical power densities of about 150 mW cm'2 were obtained at 95 °C with Pt loadings of 0.8 and 0.5 mg cm'2 at anode and cathode, respectively.
