197Other Applications

The filament stretching effect can be used to determine if any of the interior lights in a vehicle were on at the time of the accident, such as dome lights, map light, etc. It is also useful in nighttime marine collisions to determine which of the running lights would have been working at the time of impact.

Of course, different make and model lights will respond differently to impact declarations. While some will stretch readily, others may not discern-ibly distend under the same deceleration, and as inferred before, the localized deceleration can significantly differ from point to point in the vehicle.
