97 Infiltration

Infiltration is the uncontrolled inward air leakage through cracks and interstices in a building element and around windows and doors of a building, caused by the effects of wind pressure and the differences in the outdoor/indoor air density or pressure differentials. The heat loss due to infiltration is described by the following equation:

qinfiltration = °.°19 x Q x (Tinside - Toutside) (9.9)

Where Q is the infiltration air flow in cubic feet per hour.

The determination of Q is an extremely imprecise undertaking, in that the actual infiltration for similar buildings can vary significantly, even though observable parameters appear to be the same.
