The characterization of corroded specimens was conducted by stereoscopic and metallographic analysis. Stereoscopic analysis was conducted with a stereomi-croscope at 60 x. The analysis included observation of the corroded surfaces and determination of pit density (pits/m2).

The preparation of specimens for metallographic analysis consisted of cutting, mounting, grinding, and polishing. Mounting was performed in a vacuum impregnation device in order to preserve the shape of pits and keep the corroded material in place during subsequent preparation.
