Adhesive bonding, brazing, mechanical fastening, and diffusion bonding are all used routinely and successfully to join titanium and its alloys [12]. Welding of various types, including tungsten inert gas (TIG), electron beam, and plasma, is also used very successfully with titanium and its alloys. In all types of welds, contamination by interstitial impurities such as oxygen and nitrogen must be minimized to maintain useful ductility in the weldment. Thus, welding must be done under strict environmental controls to avoid pickup of interstitials that can embrittle the weld metal.
