As previously discussed corrosion degradation is the result of the oxidation of metal atoms to produce metal ions that enter the solution (Eq. 11.5). CP is therefore an attempt to convert the whole metal surface (structure to be protected) into a cathodic area. In this case the anodic reaction is moved to a more durable material, notably an inert anode (see Fig. 11.22).
