Performance Criteria Of Airframe Boost Pumps

The fact that aircraft boost pumps operate at very low net positive suction heads is evident in their operating environment. Fuel tanks are vented to ambient pressure and commercial airlines fly up to 45,000 foot altitudes where the standard atmospheric pressure is 2.14 lb/in2 (.148 bar). Altitudes are even greater for supersonic aircraft. Tank pressuriza-tion above the ambient pressure is employed only on some specialized military aircraft.

The performance criteria that specifically define the design of the centrifugal pumping element in an airframe boost pump are presented in the following discussions.
