Gas Turbine Economics

The costs associated with the use of gas turbines, or any item of capital equipment, are broken down into three categories:

1. Purchase price of equipment: turbine, compressor, auxiliary equipment, and heat recovery equipment, if desired.

2. Installation of equipment: hauling, foundations, assembly, debugging, and buildings, if required.

3. Operating costs: fuel, lubricating oil and cooling water, and normal, preventive and emergency maintenance.

Of the gas turbine-compressor combinations previously mentioned, gas turbines are by far the most frequently used as drivers for centrifugal compressors. Next in use would be axial compressors and, on occasion, the gas turbine is used as a driver for the larger screw compressors. There are also a few installations where the gas turbine is used with the reciprocating compressor.
