On some compressors (of any type) there may be a choice of bearings. For high reliability compressors in critical service or where outage is costly, the choice would be for pressure-lubricated journal and thrust bearings. Babbitted liners or pad type are preferred to rolling element bearings when available. For the higher speed compressor, tilting-pad bearings are preferred to plain journal bearings. For thrust bearings, the self-leveling, tilting-pad type is preferred. If imbedded bearing temperature sensors are desired, they are generally specified in the bearing section of the design portion of the specification rather than later when peripheral instrumentation is covered.
