Measurement and Feedback

Effective measurement is essential in monitoring progress in key performance areas such as product quality, financial performance, customer satisfaction, safety, and regulatory compliance. Rather than a burden imposed by management, measurement and feedback are consistent with personal needs. The sport of bowling, for instance, would have little appeal if performers had no knowledge of the pins knocked down and knowing the score is equally important in the workplace. Measurement and feedback systems provide a source of focus and pride for point-of-control personnel, serving to raise competitive instincts and promote understanding of the actions required to achieve and sustain improvements. Dyson's genius also included an understanding of the human desire for direct feedback of results when performing tasks. Other vacuum manufacturers had historically assumed that individuals operating the machine did not want to see the accumulation of dirt and grime as it was being vacuumed. Dyson,...

753 Cricket balls

The art of the seam bowler in cricket is also explainable with reference to boundary-layer transition and separation. The bowling technique is to align the seam at a small angle to the flight path (see Fig. 7.20). This is done by spinning the ball about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the seam, and using the gyroscopic inertia to stabilize this seam position during the trajectory. On the side of the front stagnation point where the boundary layer passes over the seam, it is induced to become turbulent before reaching the point of laminar separation. On this side, the boundary layer remains attached to a greater angle from the fore stagnation point than it does on the other side where no seam is present to trip the boundary layer. The flow past the ball thus becomes asymmetric with a larger area of low pressure on the turbulent side, producing a lateral force tending to move the ball in a direction normal to its flight path. The range of flight speeds over which this phenomenon...

1248 Polyurethane PU

Polyurethane recycling, like that for nylon, has often taken a chemical approach. This is particularly important to polyurethane, since most of its applications are for cross-linked material which cannot, therefore, be melted and reformed. The first North American facility for chemical recycling of molded polyurethanes opened in September 1997 in Detroit, Mich. The 10-million-lb year facility is owned and operated by BASF Corporation and Philip Services Corporation. While targeted first at automotive waste streams, it could eventually include appliances and construction materials, as well as recreational products such as bowling balls and pins. The facility uses BASF's patented gly-colysis process to chemically reduce PU to polyol, which can be used like a virgin polyol, combined with isocyanate to produce polyurethane products. Various types of PU can be mixed together in the process, including polyurethane paint on polyurethane parts. BASF will use the recovered polyol for...

1212 Hardware

An EMCS can range from a very simple standalone unitary microprocessor based controller with firmware routines (control software logic that the user cannot modify except for setpoints) that provides control of a terminal unit such as a heat pump to a very sophisticated large building DDC EMCS that interfaces with fire and security systems. Although this chapter will generally cite examples from applications in medium to large facilities, there have been numerous documented successes with stand-alone controllers in small buildings. Fast food and dinner houses, auto dealerships, retail stores, bowling centers, super markets, branch banks, small commercial offices, etc., have all benefited from this technology. Typically, EMCS installations at small buildings are 'design build'. That is, an EMCS manufacturer, distributor, installing contractor, end user, or some combination thereof select the EMCS hardware and decides how it is to be applied.

212 Hail Size

Stories of hailstones as large as bowling balls have been anecdotally reported, but none have actually been found or otherwise verified. Such hailstones are in the same league with jackalopes and other exaggerations popular in the Great Plains. While hailstones the size of softballs, 4 inches in diameter or 12.6 inches in circumference, do occur, they are rare. Most hailstones are less than an inch in diameter. Based on possible updraft wind speeds and the air resistance of hailstones, hailstones with 5.5-6 inch diameters are considered to be the theoretical limit. This theoretical limit excludes bowling ball-sized hailstones. Bowling balls, by the way, have a diameter of 8.5 inches, or an R of 4.25 inches. Using Equation (iv), this computes to an updraft velocity of at least 455 ft sec or 310 mph. This is about Mach 0.41, or41 of thespeed of sound at sea level. A convective updraft of this magnitude has yet to be measured on earth. This is why reports of hailstones the size of...
